(Rightallegiance.com) – In a dramatic late-night session on May 22, 2025, the U.S. House of Representatives passed President Donald Trump’s ambitious tax and spending package, known as the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” by a razor-thin margin of 215–214. The legislation now advances to the Senate, where it faces further debate and potential amendments.
The over 1,000-page bill encompasses a wide range of policy changes, including:
Tax Reforms: Extension of the 2017 tax cuts, elimination of federal taxes on tips and overtime pay, and an increase in the child tax credit to $2,500 through 2028.
Social Program Adjustments: Implementation of work requirements for Medicaid recipients, increased eligibility checks, and tighter restrictions on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
Defense and Border Security: Allocation of $150 billion in additional defense spending, including funding for unmanned drones and the proposed “Golden Dome” missile defense system, as well as $70 billion for border security measures.
Debt Ceiling Increase: A $4 trillion raise in the debt ceiling to accommodate the proposed spending.
President Trump hailed the bill’s passage as a historic achievement, stating, “This is arguably the most significant piece of Legislation that will ever be signed in the History of our Country!”
Democrats uniformly opposed the bill, criticizing it as fiscally irresponsible and detrimental to vulnerable populations. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) argued that the legislation favors the wealthy at the expense of the disadvantaged.
The bill now moves to the Senate, where it is expected to face further scrutiny and potential modifications. Republicans aim to finalize the legislation by July 4, ahead of a looming debt limit deadline in August.
As the debate continues, the bill’s impact on the national debt, social programs, and the broader economy will remain central to discussions in both chambers of Congress.
