(Rightallegiance.com) – In the pre-dawn hours of Friday in Memphis, a violent encounter unfolded after local police officers responded to reports of a suspicious vehicle parked at the intersection of Horn Lake Road and Charter Avenue. The situation escalated into a deadly shootout, resulting in the deaths of a young suspect and a police officer.
According to the Memphis Police Department, the incident began around 2 a.m. when officers approached the reported vehicle. Upon making contact, occupants of the vehicle allegedly opened fire, prompting officers to return fire. During the intense exchange, three officers and two teenage suspects sustained injuries.
The shootout claimed the life of Officer Joseph McKinney, who had been serving with the Memphis Police Department since 2020. In the chaos following the initial exchange, the vehicle containing the suspects attempted to escape, leading to a brief pursuit. The car was eventually stopped in the 400 block of Hewlett Road, where one suspect was apprehended. The second suspect managed to flee the immediate area but was soon located and detained by law enforcement.
The injured officers and suspects were quickly transported to Regional One Health Hospital. Tragically, Officer McKinney succumbed to his injuries there. Police Chief Cerelyn “C.J.” Davis, in a somber morning press conference, announced the officer’s passing and provided an update on the condition of the other officers—one was in noncritical condition and recovering well, while the third had been treated at the scene for a minor injury.
The deceased suspect, an 18-year-old who had been driving the suspect vehicle, also died from his injuries at the hospital. Details about his past emerged, revealing a history of encounters with law enforcement, including a recent arrest in March when he was found in a stolen vehicle armed with an illegally modified semi-automatic weapon. This previous arrest also included charges related to car theft and the possession of a device used to steal cars.
Chief Davis noted that both the local district attorney’s office and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation had been informed, with the latter set to lead an investigation into the shootout. She expressed profound concern over the rising audacity and frequency of armed confrontations, emphasizing the broader implications for public safety.
The impact of the shootout extends beyond the immediate loss of life. As the community grapples with this tragedy, Memphis Mayor Paul Young called for a strong community response to address and prevent such senseless acts of violence.
