(Rightallegiance.com) – Marcee Gray, mother of 14-year-old Colt Gray, the suspect in the Apalachee High School shooting, reportedly warned the school of an “extreme emergency” on the morning of the incident. According to the Washington Post, Gray texted her sister, Annie Brown, after the shooting, revealing that she had contacted the school counselor earlier that morning.
Gray had learned concerning information about her son and feared a disaster was imminent. A call log reportedly shows that Gray called the school at 9:50 a.m., approximately 30 minutes before the shooting began.
The shooting, which occurred on September 4 in Georgia, resulted in the deaths of two students and two teachers: 14-year-olds Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, 39-year-old Richard Aspinwall, and 53-year-old Cristina Irimie. Nine others were injured, including eight students and one teacher.
Annie Brown confirmed the report to the Associated Press, though she refrained from further comment. She also mentioned that her sister had been informed by the school counselor during the call that Colt had been discussing a school shooting that morning.
A fellow student, Lyela Sayarath, corroborated that a school administrator came to Colt’s math class around the same time. However, due to confusion over the name of another student, the administrator mistakenly left with the other student’s backpack just before the shooting began.
Brown shared with the Post that her nephew had been “begging for help” for months but had been let down by the adults around him. Screenshots obtained by the Post showed Brown’s text, noting that Colt’s grandmother had also sought help from the school counselor a week before the shooting. Colt was due to begin therapy the day after the incident.
Additionally, the Post revealed that Marcee Gray had pleaded guilty to a family violence charge in December 2023 and was under a court order to avoid contact with her husband, Colin Gray. Colin Gray was arrested days after the shooting, facing multiple charges, including second-degree murder and cruelty to children, for allegedly allowing his son access to a weapon. Colt Gray, who is being charged as an adult, faces four counts of felony murder. His father had informed authorities earlier in the year that Colt was struggling with bullying at school and the impact of his parents’ separation.
