(Rightallegiance.com) – A Massachusetts man has been charged after a confrontation during a pro-Israel demonstration escalated into a shooting. Scott Hayes, 47, of Framingham, is facing charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and violation of constitutional rights causing injury after he shot a man who tackled him during a heated exchange about the ongoing war in Gaza.
The altercation occurred in Newton, a city near Boston, on Thursday evening. The victim, who had been wearing a pin with a Palestinian flag, suffered life-threatening injuries and is currently hospitalized.
The confrontation began during a pro-Israel protest at the intersection of Washington Street and Harvard Street, a location known for its large Jewish population. Video footage shows Hayes exchanging words with the man across the street before the victim ran through traffic, tackled Hayes, and grabbed him by the neck. In the scuffle that followed, Hayes fired a shot that struck the man in the stomach. The man’s identity has not been released.
After the shooting, video shows Hayes attempting to provide aid to the man, urging others to call 911. The incident has drawn significant attention, with a GoFundMe page raising over $100,000 in support of Hayes. The page describes Hayes as an Iraq War veteran who has participated in numerous demonstrations supporting Jewish people and their right to self-determination.
Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan said Hayes legally owned the firearm and fired after being attacked. The shooting has raised tensions in the area, with Newton Mayor Ruthanne Fuller calling it a “frightening incident” and urging the public to remain patient while the investigation continues. Additional police patrols will be stationed at local houses of worship as a precaution.
Hayes is scheduled to be arraigned in Newton District Court. Acting Newton Police Chief George McMains has asked anyone with information or video of the incident to come forward as authorities continue their investigation.
