The charges were announced by Acting U.S. Attorney Alina Habba, a Trump appointee, who stated that McIver “assaulted, resisted, and impeded law enforcement officers” during the incident.
The confrontation occurred when Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, who had joined McIver and other lawmakers for a facility inspection, attempted to enter the detention center and was arrested by ICE agents for trespassing. McIver allegedly intervened to prevent Baraka’s arrest, leading to a physical altercation with federal officers. Video footage from the scene reportedly shows McIver pushing and striking two Homeland Security agents.
The federal charges against McIver have sparked controversy.
